Typically, solar and wind are what people first think about when one mention renewable energy. Both technologies have, justifiably so, been lauded as the future in terms of sustainable energy sources. The media is full of stories describing improvement of the technologies, implementation of bigger and better solution and new ways of applying them. Constantly the amount of energy coming from solar and wind is increasing and contributing to a better climate and environment. At the same time, over 1.2 billion people, close to 20% of the current population in the world, do not have access to electricity, making it much harder from the to move out of poverty.
A renewable resource that isn’t that well known by most is biomass. A simple definition of biomass as defined by Wikipedia: organic matter derived from living, or recently living organisms. The most common sources of biomass include wood and wood processing wastes, agricultural crops and waste material, food, yard and wood waste in garbage and animal manure and human sewage. All of these can be used as fuels to generate energy in the form of electricity and/or heat.
About 10% of today’s energy needs are covered by biomass such as wood, dried dung and crop wastes. However, most of this is burned in traditional ways as open flames or in inefficient stoves. Not only does this waste energy, it creates dangerous amounts of air pollution that is responsible for over 4 million pre-mature deaths every year. Some estimates have suggested that biomass has the potential to cover up to 50% of today’s global energy needs in a sustainable manner.
Here at IBES we have developed a biomass fueled generator that can provide both electricity and heat energy to, for example, a small village, an eco-resort or a farm. It produces 10.6kW of electricity and 20kW of heat in the form of hot water. It is very compact, measuring only 1.5(h)*1.5(d)*1(w) meter and weights only 400kg. In this unit we have combined modern versions of tried and tested technologies into a solution that is efficient, robust and reliable. Of the energy in the fuel, the fully automatic furnace boiler converts 94% into usable energy. Some of this energy is used to power an innovative, state of the art, steam engine which drives an alternator that produces electricity. The remaining heat, in the form of hot water, can be used to power space heaters, room chillers, ice-makers or even a desalination unit.
The energy produced is sufficient to give a small remote village of a hundred people basic services such as lights, water pump and charge electronic devices. It could also power one of the many telecommunications sites that are providing us with mobile phone services. It is estimated that over 600,000 cell phone sites are off-grid and are required to generate their own power on-site, mainly by expensive and polluting diesel generators. One of IBES’ biomass generators could provide cleaner and cheaper electricity for such site and could even provide excess energy to a nearby village or farm.
Our first and smallest unit, the 10.6kW Model 10, is in the last stages of prototyping/testing, and will be ready for the market in November 2016. The units will be manufactured and shipped from Dubai, UAE, a hub for global logistics. We are currently in the process of establishing a global distributor network and have already many countries covered.
